Volkswagen's Golf R Is Practical, Comfortable, and Absurdly Quick

The hot hatchback segment is not what it used to be, with the shift towards SUVs and sedans meaning there are few real contenders left. However, one iconic nameplate continues to stick around and tear up backroads. The Golf R is insanely fast, yet still more than comfortable enough to live with day-to-day.

2025 Trims and Pricing

Model

Starting MSRP

Golf R

$47,100

Golf R Black Edition

$48,415

The one thing that the Golf R is not, is cheap. It is quite easily the most expensive option in its segment, costing more than both the Toyota GR Corolla and the Honda Civic Type R. However, Volkswagen has made sure that you get a lot for your money, not just in terms of performance but also in the way of interior luxury.

Volkswagen sells the Golf R as a complete package in the United States, with only two trims to choose from. The more expensive of the two is the Black Edition, which, as you'd expect, blacks out a lot of the car. It is a purely aesthetic package. With the difference in price being so low, choosing which trim to go for really comes down to preference.

Changes For 2025

One of the most disastrous choices that Volkswagen has made is that they have removed the option of a manual transmission from both the Golf GTI and the Golf R. Considering the identity of these two hatches, we think this is a silly choice by the brand. The dual-clutch auto is still excellent, we just wish we had the choice of a six-speed.

Volkswagen has, however, done a lot to improve the Golf for this model year. They have tacked on an additional 13 horsepower to the already powerful engine. A ton of styling updates have also been made, including the addition of an illuminated Volkswagen badge at the front. On the inside, they have also upgraded the infotainment screen on offer as well as enlarging the shift paddles on the steering wheel.

Warranties and Maintenance

  • Limited Warranty - Four Years or 50,000 Miles
  • Powertrain Warranty - Four Years or 50,000 Miles
  • Complimentary Maintenance - Two Years or 20,000 Miles

There isn't much to write home about when it comes to Volkswagen's warranty coverage. Their bumper-to-bumper plan is longer than average, but their powertrain warranty is shorter than what some rivals offer. Rivals like the Hyundai Elantra N do, however, get a ten-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Volkswagen does sweeten the deal with two years of maintenance on the house, though.

Volkswagen takes the formula laid out by the Golf GTI and ramps it up in just about every area in the R. This hatchback is renowned wherever you go as the king of the streets, and for good reason. It is powerful and sophisticated, being quicker to 60 miles per hour than any of its direct rivals.

The Golf R now comes solely in one setup. An overachieving turbo-four pairs with a dual-clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. While Volkswagen estimates that it will make the zero to 60 run in 4.6 seconds, we think this number is conservative. Older automatics without the 13-horse power boost were known to make the run in as little as 4.1 seconds.

The Golf R comes standard with some pretty impressive pieces of kit, including a torque-vectoring differential and adaptive suspension. Along with all the regular drive modes, Volkswagen also includes a drift mode in the hot hatch. The little hatch is not only quick in a straight line, with it feeling eager on twisty sections of the road. It remains tight and controlled, though, filling you with confidence, even at high speeds.

Hot hatchbacks are meant to be as practical as they are sporty. While the Golf R isn't exactly going to save you money on fuel, it isn't dramatically inefficient either, especially when you consider just how fast it is. It is also slightly more efficient than its main rivals, with the Honda Civic Type R and Toyota GR Corolla both estimated to achieve 24 miles per gallon combined.

Safety and Driver Assists

  • Front Assist + Automatic Emergency Braking

Volkswagen does not hold back when it comes to standard driver assists on the Golf R. Blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keep assist are all standard. Up to 95 miles per hour, semi-autonomous driving is also offered, combining adaptive cruise control and lane-centering.

As mentioned above, the Golf R is one of the most expensive hatchbacks on the market. While its performance does a lot to justify this hefty price tag, Volkswagen also instills it with high levels of interior comfort. For a hatchback with a mainstream badge, the Golf R comes close to luxury brand levels of comfort on the inside.

The Golf is not a large hatch, but it offers some impressive levels of practicality for its size. Those in the front seats have more than enough room to stretch their legs. The rear seats may be a little cramped, but they're certainly functional for the odd occasion when you need to give someone a lift. Cargo capacity is pretty impressive, and if you fold the rear seats away you can get up to 34.5 cubic feet of space.

For you and your passenger up front, the Golf R is downright luxurious. The premium sport seats are brilliant and offer good support. You can swap them out for seats with Nappa leather upholstery instead. Every other surface is covered in high-quality soft-touch materials as well. Front seats are heated and ventilated and feature 12-way power adjustability. Other comfort features like dual-zone climate control, ambient interior lighting, and a heated steering wheel are all standard.

Infotainment and Technology

New for 2025 is the 12.9-inch infotainment screen that sits affixed to the dashboard. The software has been revised so that it is more user-friendly and it responds faster to inputs. A secondary 12.2-inch screen sits in front of the driver and displays gauges and other key information. You also get a standard configurable heads-up display.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard as well, and so is a wireless smartphone charging pad. There are USB-C ports as well in both the front and the back. Also included from the word go is a 480-watt, nine-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system, which will certainlly appeal to audiophiles.
